Welcome to the future home of the Sutherland–Mosier School of Herbal Medicine, a living tribute to generations of folk wisdom, healing traditions, and Appalachian resilience. Nestled deep in the rolling hills of Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee, this school is being built on sacred family land once belonging to my grandparents—a place that has held stories, struggles, and strength for generations.
For over 70 years, the Sutherland and Mosier families have tended these woods, creeks, and ridgelines. Here, among the blooming laurels and misty mountain air, my great-grandfather Isaac Mosier practiced folk veterinary herbalism, and my grandmother preserved old remedies that fed and healed the community.
Now, we are restoring their old homeplace into a modern sanctuary for herbal learning—a place where ancestral knowledge meets current science, where plants teach us how to live in rhythm with the earth.
The original house, with its creaking floors and hand-hewn beams, is undergoing a transformation. But we aren’t just rebuilding walls—we’re reclaiming our history and cultivating a vision. The Sutherland–Mosier School will serve as:
Tucked into the northeastern corner of Tennessee, Laurel Bloomery is a hidden jewel of the Appalachian Highlands, where medicinal plants like black cohosh, bloodroot, ginseng, and wild cherry still grow wild. It's a place where nature speaks clearly and the old ways still echo in the wind.
This is more than just a location—it’s a teacher in itself. Every stone and stem here holds a story.
We envision the Sutherland–Mosier School of Herbal Medicine as a beacon for those seeking:
This is a labor of love, sweat, and sacred intention. We are rebuilding from the foundation up—literally. If you’d like to help support the transformation of this home into a center for healing:
The Sutherland–Mosier School of Herbal Medicine is a call to return—to the plants, to the people, and to the places that made us. We are here to teach, learn, and grow together.
The mountain is calling. Will you answer?
